 Hi doctor,

My 3 yr old son keeps on getting cold even after many precautions and does not gain weight as much as a child of his age should. He is only 14 kgs.

27 .

Hi,

Some questions that i request your answer on :

1.My first child was born by C-section 4 yrs ago. I am now carrying my second. Should i try for VBAC, or go directly for C-section.

2. After my c-section i had minimum milk secretion for the first 3-4 days, and the baby looked hungry all the time. Is this normal and is there something i should do about it?

3.My first child is now 4.5 yrs old. His weight is at 14-15 kgs for a year now. He doesnt increase in weight although he is a good eater and likes most veggies and fruits.(and snacks too!). Is there something i should do to make him gain weight? Is he currently considered underweight?

4.My son is prone to respiratory infections (common cold, cough, throat infections). Cough is more prevalent and i end up giving him antibiotics 8-9 times a year. I know it is not good to give antibiotics so often, but my local pediatrician doesnt seem to bother about it and asks me to give it. What should i do to prevent him getting sick often and prevent use of antibiotics.

Thanks in advance!

I am a mother of 1yr old boy baby.

His birth weight was 3.5 Kg & he is now aroung 10 kgs.

His weight gain has been good but he looks atheletic & and not chubby.

But suddenly he has a very bad appetite - he doesnt take any food that is been offered to him.Esp. any carbs - he doesnt touch rice at all.

He takes lactogen(started feeding lactogen only from 11 month - in an attampt to stop my feeding)/ curd / dates / water.

To feed him anything other than the above mentioned food items is al most impossible.

Kindly suggest what should be done as we have tried to offer him at least 3 / 4 varieties of food products at any point in time.

My daughter is 4 years old and she weighs just 12Kgs. She has always been a fussy eater and I never force feed her. I never miss to give her cashewnuts(4 to 5), a glass of milk everyday. I dont have to pack her lunch this year.So i somehow can feed her. But my worry is that from next year on she has to have her lunch at school and I'm sure she will bring it back jus the way I packed it.

Is her weight okay? What should I give her and how should I feed her?

My son of age 5 's urine is always surrounded by ants. Is he diabetic? Bcoz my father and grandparents are diabetic. I'm not. Please help me.

If your son is otherwise fine, Urine surrounded by ants is no indication that someone is diabetic , this is quite a common feature, but because diabetes runs in families so whenever you visit your paediatrician next do discuss your family history with him so that he/she  can keep a watch.

Hi Natalia,

No 2 kids are same so u cannot compare him with your daughter, From what you have written, doesn’t looks like there is a problem, some kids start speaking late, so if his understanding of things and hearing is all right, don’t worry, just continue talking to him, reading to him and otherwise stimulating him and just relax and enjoy your babies!

Hi, what kind of feeds you baby is on? Are you giving him diluted milk? If you exclusively  breastfeed your baby there is no need to give water, and also breastfed babies may pass stool every 3rd 4th day. Please see your pediatrician so that he can thoroughly examine the baby.

Your concern about your baby drinking the green fluid at birth has nothing to do with the problems of blocked nose or cold at this age of 7 months. The problem due to drinking of that green fluid( which is called as meconeum) at birth has outcomes by 7 days and beyond that there is no long term effect due to the same.About using Timinic for blocked nose - your paediatrician who has actually examined the baby is the best judge for that and I cannot comment without examining the baby.

Hello Doctor,

Warm Greetings.

I'm staying in Kuwait. on 19th October'10 I delivered my second boy kid. I'm taking treatment for skin allergy before my delivery and till date. So my gynaec advised not to breast feed my baby and advised for Formula Milk(S26). He used to have around 750ml-1000ml per day. He will be passing stool two days once. From the day he born and till date  his stool color is dark green. Is there any problem because of this???

Please advise...

Thanks in advance

If everything else is ok you do not need to worry about the green colour and every 2nd day stools, provided the baby is comfortable .

2)DO I HAVE TO SUPPLEMENT ANY FORMULA.BUT   FORMULA MILK IS ANY WAY A FORM OF COWMILK AND IS A MAIN CUSE OF FLEM AND CHEST CONGESTION.IT CAUSES COUGH   AND COLD OFTEN.HOW OFTEN IS THIS TRUE.

3)I WANT TO BREASTFEED MY DAUGHTER  TILL HER SECOND BIRTHDAY.I WANT TO KEEP UP MY SSUPPLY GOOD.PLS SUGGEST SOME REMEDIES.IAM VERY PARTICULAR NOT TO GIVE MY DAUGHTER ANY TIN FOODS INCLUDING FORMULA.

That’s a very wise decision. The best way to keep up the milk supply is to keep breastfeeding. IIn addition eat a healthy balanced diet( rich in green leafy veggies, fruits and dals), continue taking Iron

and Calcium supplements and drink plenty of water.

my daughter is 7 months old,but she not yet started crolling or sitting. why?

Is your baby sitting with support? Are other developmental milestones normal? Crawling comes at or after 10 months. If you feel that other milestones are delayed, then you need to get her evaluated by a

pediatrician in person.

3 Egg / fish can be started once she completes 1 yr of age. For spices start with milder ones used sparingly and then you can gradually increase. As with all new foods, start with 1 new food at a time and
watch for signs of allergic response if any.

My son is 7 months old and he has a mild ear infection he has been taking antibiotics for 3 days now and my concern is that we are flying in 6 days to florida is that a good idea??? Could he be in pain? Can i get tips on how to help him with pain? I am a first time mom so I do not know about flying with babies. I need as many tips as i can. Thank you.

Yes, flying van cause some extra botheration to the child in presence of an ear infection but that would

be very short lasting. Give some sedatives to the child during the flight as per advice of ur doctor. Also if a child is actively during landing and taking off, then chances of aggravation of pain is less but with a 7 month old, this coordination might not be possible practically. I assume that besides antibiotics child is on antihistaminics and decongestants also, as they will help in early recovery befor you fly.

My son is 11 months old and he is having problem of excessive sweating over his head. He is on mother feed 2-3 times a day plus NAN formula milk. He got only 1 teeth and also he has not started walking though activities wise he is very active kid.

I need your inputs on his sweating. We consult with 3 different doctors and 2 of them says its normal and the 3rd one said calcium deficiency. Before I go ahead with extra calcium source I need so inputs from you.

Excess head sweating is common and normal in infants especially in warmer seasons but in calcium deficient kids excessive sweating is also seen. Apart from having a calcium rich diet and having Calcium & Vitamin D supplements it is must that baby should have an exposure to natural sun light at leat 15 to 30 mins daily- without this baby will remain Vitamin D deficient even if you are giving Vitamin D supplements and a vitamin D deficient baby will never absorb calcium. Are there any other signs of Vit D deficiency? Are his motor milestones appropriate for age? If you want to be very sure before starting calcium you can get his serum calcium levels tested.

My 26 month old son does not chew his food very well. he just swallows soft or semi soft food like daal rice, khichdi, noodles, small pieces of chicken etc...

He does chew hard foods like chips, nuts(cashews, almonds), pizza, cookies etc but not that well either. His stomach is quite bloated and feels tight to palpation. He has regular bowel movements but at times i see small pieces of nuts in his stools...

Also, could this be the reason that he does not sleep through the night?I have discussed this issue numerous times with his pediatrician, but the doctor just wants me to wait it out...but I'm very concerned.....

what would be your advice??

You gradually try to introduce harder/ chewy foods, sit and eat with him every time patiently explaining him how to chew food, this will settle with time. Inadequately chewed food causes hyperacidity and

increased gas production and thus the feeling of discomfort, this can be the reason of his not sleeping through the night.

My 12 week old baby girl feel asleep on my chest and when she woke up I noticed that her feet looked like they had bruises on them. When I looked a little later they just looked like broken blood vessels. Is this normal? I was holding her by the bottom and her feet were kinda tucked like a stink bug. Could this be a circulation problem?

The description which you have given seems to be a chance happening which has occurred due to a particular position. There is no such known medical entity to my knowledge which can result in this. Still if there remains a doubt and if this is happeing again and again we need to examine the baby regarding presence of all pulses in both legs and to check Blood pressure in all hands and legs. Any well equipped neonatal centre has equipment to check these things in a baby.

i have a 2 years old daughter, whose weight is 9,400 kg,height 81.5 cm,and she was born about 3,700 kg,well our pediatric told us she is beyond normal weight,so told us to do first urine analysis to exclude urinary tract infection which may be the cause, then if normal we will do blood analysis, well the girl doesn't eat quantities, but small quantities many times a day...so do what do you think may be the reason for this little weight.

There can be many causes for low weight and height( chronic infection , Iron deficiency, vitamin D def

etc), to find out the reason a thorough clinical examination and history is required ,based on these two any investigations required should be done so I guess your Paediatrician will be a better judge. Yes, it is not uncommon to have recurrent urinary infections as acause of Growth failure esp in Girls, so getting a urine analysis will be a part of investigations in the case of your child.

I have a 7 month old who spits up puddles. It seems he spits up half of what he eats, at least. He's on prevacid and reglan, but there is still puddles. After he eats, he will spit up at least 3 puddles with in the hour. I've put rice cereal in his bottle to make it thick, and it stil comes up. The only thing that doesn't come up is baby food mixed with rice cereal. Is there another condition I should know about? He's going to go see a specialist soon. I'm just wondering what I should expect.

Is your baby growing well? Are there any problems because of this spitting up? Regurgitation in babies is not an uncommon phenomenon and if the baby is growing properly and does not have any respiratory problems because of regurgitations(spitting), usually no treatment is given as it’s a selflimiting condition which settles by the age of 12mo in majority of the kids.

As true with any other vaccine, there is a very small risk of reaction to any vaccine due to the chemical preservatives in the vaccine. Besides this Influenza Vaccine also has EGG Albumin in it and so it cannot

be given in a person who has egg allergy.

Its v normal. If theres any pain /discomfort or fever due to teething, you can give paracetamol syrup according to weight ( 10 to 15mg/kg). You can also massage his gums with clean fingers. Regarding

eating, just remember, don’t force him and just keep on offering healthy food choices.

Even though my son does not have cough or cold, he has problem in breathing at night from past 2 days. I guess the flem(phlegm) accumulated in lungs which cause this trouble. What is the suggestion?

By your description it doesn’t looks like symptoms of any problem/phlegm in lungs, rather it looks more like a problem in the upper airway say a nose block or enlarged tonsils/ adenoids etc , Please go and consult a pediatrician as the child needs thorough clinical examination.

 Hi doctor,

My child frequently suffers from cough and throat infection. once in every two or three months. Doctors generally recommends antibiotic courses. What must be the treatment for this.

Infections are a normal component of growing up . 3 -5 infns in an year is fine. The rate can be higher during the first year of school/ preschool. These infections are usually viral infections , the treatment

of which is usually symptomatic ie for fever, cough etc. Antibiotics are only required when there is any evidence of bacterial infection .

Infections are a normal component of growing up . 3 -5 infns in an year is fine. The rate can be higher

during the first year of school/ preschool. If your baby is maintaining his Growth percentiles then do not worry much about weight gain ( Plz get his wt, ht etc plotted on growth charts by your Paediatrician
that will give you an idea about his growth rate). As long as your baby is eating a wholesome diet, is active and has no deficiencies , theres no need to worry.

 1.Hi,

What was the indication of your 1st CS? Although a Vaginal delievery is quite possible after a previous CS, Your obstetrician will be able to assess exact situation at the time of labor as it all depends on the
relative sizes of fetus and your pelvis, the fetal lie, fetal wellbeing etc.
2.During the initial days colostrum – a calorie dense yellowish thick milk is secreted ,its quite less in volume but sufficient. As the baby keeps on feeding the milk supply increases in proportion to the
demand, The important thing to remember during initial few days is to keep the confidence in your ability to produce sufficient milk eventually for your baby and to let the baby suckle as an when he
demands. Nature takes care of the rest.
The main thing that you have to do is eat a wholesome diet and stay relaxed. If you are under stress, ur milk supply gets affected so you should try to stay as much relaxed as possible.
3.Your elder one is not underweight but yes he is towards the lowerside of his weight range. This is a stage
where majority of kids have the same problem. I would like to know his growth pattern. Do you have
his growth recorded on charts? Is his height increasing? When the kids start school, many times they
frequently catch viral infections which in turn leads to low growth rate, and also because of increased
activity, less sleep etc they get weak. Please tell your paediatrician to plot his height and weight charts
and also to explain them to you, Then only we will be able to know if theres actually a problem or not.
You can also increase the calorie density of his food by adding ghee/ butter/nuts etc to his daily food.
4.You are right, Too much antibiotic use is not advisable especially in children. What is the age of your
son? Does he have any tonsils or adenoid problem? Is there a history of allergic bronchitis or asthama
in your family? The way you have described it, it looks like more of an allergic response as its extremely rare to have 8 -9 episodes per year. If these episodes are not associated with fever and the child is not very sick during these episodes, chances of bacterial infection is v less and thus no need of antibiotic.

Hello Doctor,

My husband had epilepsy problem. He undertaken treatment for around 5 years and now he has no problem. My 3 year old daughter was affected by fits once. That day, she was having fever, but unknowingly, i gave her coconut oil bath. after her bath, she felt so tired and go to bed. In the next 30 minutes, she got affected by fits. Now i want to know is it heritary problem. How to prevent her from this problem. She is school going.

First of all you have not mentioned whether doctors were able to find any cause of the seizures in your husband or not. We call it epilepsy usually when there is no obvious cause for the seizures and in that case the kids have a little extra risk of developing epilepsy. BUT in case of your kid, as you have mentioned, she was having fever on the same day, the day she had seizures. In this regard I need to know the exact pattern and duration of seizures and condition of the child in next few hrs. I t seems that your child had a Febrile Seizure. Febrile seizure is something entirely different from Epilepsy and is harmless and this never happens beyond 6 yrs of age. But as I mentioned I need to know a little more details in your case to differentiate between a Febrile seizure and Epilepsy.

Dear Doctor,

My kid is 1.4 months ols,for past 3 days,my baby is suffereing from running nose and cough. But doctor gave her jus a cough syurp and told that it would be ok day after day.

but still she gets the cough.my issue is she is having anything.past 3 days she didnt have any solid food ,all time crying and i really dont know wat should i give her to eat and drink.pleas suggest me,as what should i feed her.

Thanking You.

Dear

It seems ur kid is going through a viral upper respiratory infection. As is the case with any  viral infection, it will take 3-5 days to settle down. Any remedy , likea cough syp, which has anti allergic and any decongestant will help soothe her symptoms to an extent but not 100%. In such infections its OK for the kid for not accepting solids or may be even semisolids. Even if ur kid is havin liqiuids, that should be fine for next 3-4 days. What is more important that u should watch for these alert signs – excess lethargy, a perisitent high fever, recurrent vomits, excess loose motions, decreased urine passage—all these signs warrant investigations for any other infections. A dose of Crocin or calpol will also help ur kid as kids are usually cranky as they also suffer from  body pains like adults but they cant tell us about that and crocin/calpol will help in that and in that case can be repeated 6- 8 hrly.

Hello doctor,                                                                                                                                                                      Am a mother of 9 years old kid who is suffering with recurring stomach pain for last 5, 6 days. During the day he is alright, but night time he is really suffering a lot and not sleeping. Actually our doctor is Dr Ramesh, but since pain started in the night we could not meet Dr Ramesh and took him to some other doctor and he says it is beacause of acidity and gastritis and prescribed pan 20, mucaine gel and cyclopam . But despite of taking these medicines for last two days again he got pain last night. I tried to take him to Dr Ramesh and i think he is not available till 18th, Please advice me what should be done to get some immediate relief or can i bring him to you today,                                                                                                  thank you sir,                                                                                                                                          Mrs vijaya sreenivasu

Dear Ms Vijaya,

It wont be prudent to comment on this without examining your child, but so far as it appears from your narration and also that he has not responded to medications for acidity/gastritis, it seems that this is not the case. I would like to know if ur kid is constipated or not. It is likely that ur kid might be suffering from Helminthiasis(worms) or may be Giardiasis (a kind of parasite) and for the same I would advise you to get a “Stool Routine microscopy” test done from a lab with good microbiological support.

Dear Doctor,

My son is sucking his thumb from 3 - 4 months. We tried to avoid as it wil lead to abnormal teeth in future. But we could not avoid it.

Please suggest is it OK for him to suck his thumb?

Thanks

Bhavya

Hi,

What is the age of your son? If its under 1 n ½ u do not need to do anything as its quite normal for babies of 3/ 4 mo till 1  1 1/2yr to suck their thumbs/fingers. If your child is older , try to find out if he has some problem or feels insecure or uncomfortable about something? Is there some change in his life( new school, new house, new sibling? If you find something deal with it patiently and try to distract him everytime you see him suckinghis thumb instead of telling him to stop or nagging him.

 Hello Doctor,

I am Gowri and i have 3 1/2 year old daughter, We have just moved to Chennai from Bangalore( 1 month ago).My question is my daughter has  prickly heat boils on her nose, forehead and neck....what can i use to reduce it.Thank you doctor,Regards ,Gowri

Dear Gowri,

The sites which you have mentioned, do not have pricky heat boils especially on nose, I would like to see a photograph of the same if that’s possible. In all probability, what your daughter is going through is Seborrhic dermatitis, which is due to blockage of small skin pores by oily secretions of the skin. Any oily application on face or even scalp will aggravate the problem. So in case you apply oil on scalp, either you should stop it all together or should shampoo hair within an hour of oil application. It is likely that ur kid will also be having Dandruff problems too, which is usually associated with these skin problems. Secondly, wash the face and forehead of the child with any mild soap at least twice a day must before going to bed) I would need a feed back from you to advise any thing further on points mentioned above.

 Hello,,,

My daughter is 22 months old. In the age of 12- 18 months she didn't eat properly .so I continued her breastfeeding .But now a  days ,before 2-3 months ago she  started eating rice, chapati, also.but she does not drink bottle milk.So now she should stop breastfeeding .please suggest me any trick. Is there any medicine to stop milk production in breast ? I have also applied bitter taste things to my breast.

Hi,

Please don’t worry about stopping breast feeding, kids gradually stop on their own and moreover it will not harm the kid. If she has started eating other foods, gradually introduce her to new things and with time as she sarts eating more she will herself stop breast feeding . Kids breast feed for cofort and security also. Normally kids breast feed for 2yrs.Do not start bottle if you want to start top milk give in a cup or sipper. If she doesn’t take top milk don’t worry, introduce her to curds, paneer, cheese etc.

 Hello Doctor,

I am a mother of an eight months old. I am breastfeeding her. I would like to continue the same. She is also having top feed from the time she was 6 months old. Now my question is when should I introduce top milk, like cows' milk to her?? The question doesnt mean that I am tired of breastfeeding her or that I wanna stop it. I just want to know what is the age in which the child can digest other milk??? I am planning to breastfeed my child for atleast 2 years.

Thanks in advance,

Bhavana

Hi Bhavana,

You can start top milk in the form of cereals cooked in milk and also your baby can drink top milk but  It’s a myth that top milk should be taken by kids compulsorily. She can eat all things and have milk from you. Also if she enjoys curds and cottage cheese they are far better options as compared to milk, both calorie and calcium content wise.Continuing breast feeding is a v good idea.

My 17 mont old son hits his head and rubs his legs when he is not heard or when I tell him No for something. He recently started yelling at grocery store. My questions is is this behaviour normal or soemthing that should alert me as parent.

My son is also still breastfeeding and eats solid food as well. what should be his weight now.

This is the age when most of the kids have these tantrums , they pass with age. Just stay calm and deal with it firmly but lovingly. These more commonly happen when the babies are tired or hungry or sleepy or frustrated.

As long as your child is active, you need not worry about weight. The weight range for a 17 month is between  9 to 13 kgs.

Dear Doctor,

I am blessed with a baby girl on 31 july 2010. She weighs 3.7 kg on birth. she is 33 days old as on today. She developed a mild cold and is having difficulty while sucking milk.

I am giving her Cefadur drops 12 in the morning and 12 at night, nasal spray for relief.

1. Is it right to give her head bath every alternate day.

2. She keeps clung to me for atleast one hour on to my nipple sucking on and off , how long do they have milk.

3. she has become very restless especially at night when i try to remove her from my breast, she starts yelling. and immediately with in a half an hour she cries and when i try to feed her she vigourouslu sucks.this is been there for the past ten days.

4. she has very restless sleep during daytime, she sleeps only when i rock the cradle once i stop she wakes up.

5. how long do i need to feed her and duration of intervals.

6. she sleeps at night 2 or 3 is it normal for them to sleep like this?what do i do to change her sleep schedule?

It would be very greatful on your part if you can answer my queries.

Thanking you,

Ananya Vishwanath

1.You can if you feel the need to, but you will need to be be very quick in drying the baby and maintaining the temperature of the room in which you bathe the baby ie it shouldn’t be cold.

2.Babies usually empty the breasts in the initial 15 -20 mins of active sucking. As she is having nasal block, she must be breathing from mouth and thus she stays at breast for longer periods as she must be taking breathing breaks in between and also when one breathes thru mouth, he gets more thirsty. At times babies want to stay attached to breast as they feel v secure and emotionally satisfied there. Do try to stay near her/ hold her as much as possible in between feeds also. As long as you have no problems ( soreness etc), its ok even if she stays attached for an hour.

3.If your baby having blocked nose then due to breathing from mouth she might be having dry mouth and thus the more frequent desire to suck.or She might be having colic episodes where the babies are v restless  and demand feed frequently have fitful sleep and are generally v cranky . this is a selflimiting condition which settles in a few weeks.

4. If she is awake is she crying continuously ? coz if she doesn’t, don’t try to put her to sleep , let her play and shell sleep according to her bodys requirement.

5. Exclusive breast feeding is recommended til 6mo of age and then with breast feeds complementary feeds are started. Ideally on demand feeding is recommended and after the initial period all babies make a routine of their own and usually settle at 2 to 3 hr interval . The babies leave the breast once they are satiated so the duration is different for each baby but if the baby goes to sleep after initial few sucks, do wake her up then and ensure she takes a proper feed.

6.

Hello,

You can breast feed before going to and after coming back from work and for the in between feeds you can express your milk and store it. The person whos taking care of the baby in your absence can feed this milk with a paladai or a small glass.Small babies have a tendency to push everything out with their tongue so spoon feeding many times poses problem.

Ideally if you are using the pump with correct technique, it shouldn’t hurt. And also breast  milk can be expressed manually .

How to encourage let-down ( milk yield)?

some suggestions. Not all the techniques work for each mother.

1. Relax.

2. Warm packs or wash clothes applied to the breast for a few minutes before

pumping. Or take a hot shower.

3. Massage the breasts gently, with the heel of your hand, starting at the chest wall

and moving toward the areola.

4. Bend over and let the breasts hang free for a moment or two.

5. Develop a pumping routine. Always follow the same steps each time you pump.

6. Stroke your breasts in a feather light manner from the upper edge near the arm

pit, toward the nipple and areola while you are pumping.

7. cuddle your baby lots.

8. Don't worry about how much you obtain.

How is manual expression of breastmilk done?

 you will need

a clean, wide mouthed jar because it is

difficult to aim the streams of milk into a small opening. With practice, some

mothers feel that manual expression is easier and less time consuming than a

breast pump.

1. Position the thumb and first two fingers at the edge of the areola [Table].

2. Push in toward the chest wall, spreading the fingers apart slightly.

3. Let the thumb and fingers roll toward the nipple using light compression (don't

squeeze).

4. Rhythmically repeat compressions.

5. Rotate the thumb and fingers around the breast to ensure emptying of the ducts.

Remember to avoid squeezing, pulling or sliding on the breast or nipple.

All the best. Hope this helps. In case you have any further queries  you can call me on weekdays between 10 to 12 am and 5 to 7 pm.

How can i work on my retracted nipples to enable breast feeding for my child.

Hi,

Do you have flat nipples or are they truly inverted?

are you able to pull out your nipples with hand?  If this is the case then when your baby sucks, your nipples will automatically protract. Are you pregnant or have you already had your baby?

Dear Madam,

I got delivered in Dec and my daughter is 8 months old. I feed her upto 7 months and now i am unable to feed her due to lack of secretion. I have not feed her for the past 15 days. I am very much worried as she may not develop sufficient immune power. From the day i stopped feeding her she is no way or other having fever. Is there any possibilities of increasing lactation or is it advisable to induce lactation artifically. What shall i do to help my daughter improve her immune power. Please help me

She is 7 kg now and  7 month 15 days old

Regards

Shermy Metilda

Hi Shermy,

Many congrats for being such a conscientious breastfeeding mom. You are doing a great job.

There are 2 factors responsible for milk production and secretion baby’s sucking and mothers confidence in her ability to breast feed. As you were successfully feeding during the initial 7 months that means there’s no problem as such. A mother always secretes milk as per her babies requirement, this is NATURE’S RULE. Was  there any sudden change in your routine life when you felt that secretion has decreased?  Your milk production will pick up naturally by:

1.      Relaxing and  Being confident ( most important. Without these nothing works!).

2.       Putting the child frequently to breast, and while feeding if there’s anything or anyone that bothers you stay away from that thing/ person, idea is to feed in a calm environment .

3.      Having plenty of liquids, fresh fruit and veggies, and protein rich diet. Don’t take too much dairy products in your daily diet

4.       Taking warm showers before breast feeding

5.      Spending as much time with you baby as possible

6.      Remembering: YOU CANT LOSE YOUR MILK BUT YOU CAN DOUBT  IT AWAY.

The child gets maximum immunity boosting factors during the initial days of breast feeding so don’t worry about that as she is already past 6 months  . As regards to boost her immunity further, keep breast feeding and give her well balanced complementary foods.

The fever could be due to any infection. Is she cutting teeth? Do go and see a  paediatrician  for the persisting fever.

My kid is 1 yr and 10 months old. He has still not started to talk. He makes good noise and does some blabbering similar to baby talk but he doesnt tell any proper words. Is it normal? Please Advice. Eagerly awaiting your reply.

Yours faithfully,

Vidh.

Hi ,

As  long as your baby’s hearing is fine you do not need to worry. Keep on stimulating your child by talking, singing, reading etc.  You can get your boy’s hearing assessed , theres an “OAE testing” that ENT specialists  do these days that’s quite informative.  All the best.

hello Docotor,

my son is about 4 years and he was talking perfectly.  now a days he struggle to talk. After taking him to speech therapist for 4 months now he is good. But it is not fully cured so please suggest me that how to solve my son's problem.

Hi,

You have not mentioned the reason behind your son’s speech problem. Keep on following the speech therapists instructions and keep on praising and encouraging your son for each improvement, however small it may be. These problems take time to settle so have patience and do not rush your child.

Please advise me regarding diet chart and nutritional supplements for my one year old girl baby

Hi,

Each baby is different so you can’t follow a strict diet chart. Just ensure that you are giving your baby wholesome food consisting of all food groups. Don’t force  feed or insist on finishing up the food if baby says she is full. If she’s having a proper diet, no supplement is required , still consult your pediatrician ,who after examining your daughter will tell you if there are any deficiencies requiring supplements

Hi Doctor,

I am Anju Thirukumaran from Chennai.I am a mother of a one year old baby girl Madhu.
I am a member of Chennaimoms Community.
Doctor i wanted to breastfeed my child till she is two years old.
But due to various reasons, I had to stop breast feeding to Madhu when she was 6 months old and left my child with my mother in my hometown neyveli and came to chennai for work as i was working in a software company. My mother could not come to chennai with me since Doctor advised her not to travel as her uterus removal surgery was done tat time.

I didnt take any tablet or any natural remedy to stop my breast milk secretion. It stopped by itself as i stopped feeding
But now i can bring my baby and have with me,she is one year old now.
And now I wanted to breast feed her again till she is two years old.

Doctor could you please advice me regarding this, is there any treatment for this breast milk secretion.

Thank you Doctor.

Hi Anju,

Breast milk production and secretion physiology is such that it is use dependent, the more its used, the more its produced. Cases of adoptive mothers having breast milk have also been reported. You can start lactating again once your baby starts sucking on your breasts, but the initial few weeks will require lots of patience and hard work on your part. No special medicine other than iron and calcium supplements is required. Also have lots of water and nutritious food. If you face any practical problems in this you can call me on my cell. All the best.

Hi Dr.,

Can  you let me know the how much quantity of milk per day is necessary for a baby who is in his 12th month. If I give more milk  3 times a day my baby is refusing to take his meals..

Sharadha

Hi Shradha,

Three times a day is more than sufficient.A 12 month old needs all groups of foods including dairy products . His diet thus, should also contain cereals, pulses, fruits and veggies etc. Avoid giving milk for an hr before mealtimes as it suppresses appetite.

Hi Shacchee,

I have a premature girl baby.SHe was born at 32 weeks. Now she is 7 months old and normal now .we have started on solids(cerelac).

My concern is she is not drinking formula or milk.(Hardly she takes 200 ml that too she drinks it when she is sleeping.Iam giving Similac Gain Advance 2).Is this milk enough??I have stopped breastfeeding(As she stopped drinking it my supply also stopped).PLase help.

Also please can you give me a list of food to be given to a 7 month old kid and in what quantity. Thanks in advance.

Hi,

You haven’t specified the amount of cerelac she is taking every day. Though 200ml in 24 hrs is less if the child is predominantly on milk, but if she is taking enough of other things it will do. If you have even a small amount of milk you can restart breast feeding and the milk flow will increase.

A 7 mo baby can be given mashed ripe banana, papaya, cheeku, boiled mashed apple and potato, mashed rice, overcooked khichdi, daal, sooji cooked in milk and sugar etc. Remember to keep the consistency v thin initially and gradually make it thicker as the baby gets accoustomed to a particular consistency. Also please remember that it is always advisable to start 1 new thing per week , let the baby get accoustomed to it and then start another thing next week. All the best.

Hi Dr.Shacchee

Looking forward for your reply ):

Hi, This is a v common problem .At 1 yr of age as the child is developing a sense of self . As per your information your child appears to be a healthy one and chubbiness is no indicator of good health. As long as your child is active and healthy its fine. What you need to do is just to follow simple basics…..

1 Don’t force.

2 Keep providing healthy options and all kinds of food(fruits, veggies, cereals, pulses etc). Do not give milk or juice 1 hr before meal time.

3 If the child rejects a certain food, give a break of 1 to 2 wks then repeat.

4 Make mealtimes a family affair, even if its just you and the baby it will do.

5 Don’t attach emotions and awards and punishments to food.

6 Practise what you preach!

All the best.

Hello Dr,

I am  Lalitha Mishra and I have a 8months old son, he is on my feed and I started feeding him ceralac at the age of 4months as per my doctor’s advices and now I started with mashed dal chaval for lunch and he was having it fine till now but off late he rejects food and he wants only my milk (vomits if we give him formula milk and does not like feeding bottles) so please suggest me what to do to keep my son healthy.

From:

Lalitha Mishra.

Hi Lalitha, this is a common problem and the cause is the development of the feeling of self in the child. The best solution is to keep on offering wholesome age appropriate foods to the baby without attaching any rewards or punishments to it. Keep  mealtimes pleasant and Just keep offering without forcing.Keep regular appointments with the pediatrician to have an idea about his growth. It’s a good thing that you baby is not fond of bottle.

Dear Sir,

My cousin's son is of 1.5 years old now and he can't hold is neck firmly and he is unble to stand also.At the time of birth,he was weak and cried after 4 days.So what might be the problem for this and kindly let us know what is the treatment for this.

Hi,

From the information that you have provided, it appears to be a case of developmental delay due to some neurological insult inutero or at the time of delievery. You need to show the child to a pediatrician , who after examining the child for various other parameters will be able to tell you the exact extent of the problem and treatment options available.

Please make the visit as early as possible coz the earlier you start treatment the better are the outcomes.

God bless.

My son is two years and nine months old. He is normal in his weight and height. He has been asked to take iron tonic(Trifer) for six months. He eats all vegetables,  egg, fish and drinks milk. What else should I add in his diet?. Will his iron deficiency improve in days to come?

Rajula

Hi Rajula, even if the child is normal wt and ht for his age, he can be anaemic and moreover as this is the growing age, many times the dietary intake might not be sufficient to cope up with the daily body requirement hence the need for supplementation. The various common reasons for anaemia could be : 1. insufficient intake  2.worm infestation  3.frequent illness episodes  4.diseases like thalassemia 5.lead poisoning etc

So if your paediatrician has advised then do give iron supplements. Most of the the iron deficiency settles with regular supplementation , the exact duration and reqirement is based on the kind and magnitude of deficiency ( which ur Dr will tell you based on the blood test reports of your child).

The foods rich in iron are: jiggery, dates, green leafy veggies esp cauliflower greens nd radish greens, if ure a non vegetarian then red meats, eggs. Also try n cook ur greens in iron vessels, nd do try to add fresh lime juice or any other citrus fruit/ juice with this as vit c present in these improves iron absorption.

I am a lactating mother of a 1-year-old.  Some are asking me to stop feeding my baby now and some are asking me to continue to another year.  Please advice me at what age of the baby should I stop feeding.

Congratulations on being a breast feeding mom nd do keep up the gud work, whatever people may say. Theres no upper age limit to stopping breast feeding. It can be continued till the time you are comfortable with it. The only thing to remember is to start introducing a variety of foods starting after the baby is 6 months of age . After 6 mo of age breast milk provides more of psychological nourishment to the baby though it has nutritional value also as well as helps mom in losing calories( Breast feeding has countless other benefits also).Usually a baby likes to breast feed till atleast 2 yrs of age bt it entirely depends on you if you are ok with it u can continue for greater duration also. Do remember to take care of nutrion also. All the best.

1.  WHICH IS THE BEST WAY FOR FEEDING TWINS? FEEDING BOTH BABIES AT THE SAME TIME OR SEPARATELY  ?

2.  FROM WHICH MONTH OF BABY WE CAN START OIL MASSAGING ? WHICH OIL IS THE BEST?

1 It depends actually on the kind of support you have with you. Both the metods have their pros an cons I’ll tell you both n then you can decide which suits you more , the only thing to remember is that even with twins, breast milk supply is sufficient to feed them both adequately.

If you feed them together, you will be done with the feeding together and after they have been burped and changed, you can rest during the time wn they are napping, but then to actually execute this, you need to have one more person to help all the time who can help in burping and changing one baby while you do the same for the other . But if you are alone its better to feed them one after another so that you feed, burp nd change 1 and then while he is napping start with the other.

2 Oil massage can be started anytime after birth in a full term normalbirthweight baby provided you keep the area temperature controlled. Before the cord has fallen of just be careful in handling the area. Oils like olive oil, coconut oil, mustard oil are good but you should be clear that theres no special benefit from any oil. Massage provides a type of stimulation to babys muscles and the touch provides a kind of emotional, psychological benefit to the baby, especially when the mom sings and talks to the baby while massaging him.

Hi, firstly I’ll tell you not to worry about the weight if your daughter is otherwise healthy and nd ,active. 12 kgs though less, lies wthinin the normal range as per Indian standards. All the kids have this inherent capacity to eat as per their body needs. Its really good dat you don’t forcefeed her as forcefeeding can lead to serious eating disorders later in life.

Imp things to remember are:

1 Be always patient. Make a fixed schedule for meal n snacktimes, but be occasionally flexible also. Remember not to give her anything esp milk/ juices/biscuits etc atleast 1 hr before mealtimes

2 always keep mealtimes stressfree and pleasant and the menu interesting like you can combine a healthy dish with a not soo healthy one (the kids fav).

3 try that the family eats together atleast 1 meal in a day. Involve her while buying veggies/fruits etc, take her help in setting the table etc

4 Give her plenty of healthy food options to choose from.Teach her the imp of healthy eating thru poems stories etc but don’t nag nd don’t compare with other kids

5 Introduce her to all kinds of fruits, veggies, cereals, pulses, other cuisines so that she develops a flexible n healthy attitude towards food.

6 last but the most imp DO NOT USE FOOD AS A FORM OF REWARD OR PUNISHMENT.

All the best n have lots of patience.
