Tags : support for women's reservation bill
Hi Moms,
I support the women's reservation bill and I think we all need to support this bill. Let me share my opinion against many of the arguments against this bill.
Politics in dirty
It's fashionable to say politics is dirty. But whether we like it or not, laws made by politicians affect us on every aspect of our life. Our political system might be slow and has flaws, but it does work. A case in point would be the new law to prevent child abuse (Prevention of offenses against the child bill 2009).
Yes, in the beginning many women might just be a proxy for the family, but with time and exposure they will start to develop their own voice. When women started to work, the same thing happened. Inspite of earning a salary they didn't have financial freedom from their husband or family. But nobody can deny that over a generation women have become empowered because of their employment. Hopefully the same will happen with the women representatives.
It is naive to say that men and women are equal. Yes, it would be great if it's true and we don't need preferential treatment like reservation. But that is not the reality. So till we become equal we need a helping hand to overcome generations of inequality.
Also whether we are in politics or not, women need to make sure that we are taken seriously by political parties as a voting block. Today no political party takes women seriously as they take religious parties, caste based organizations etc. A political party think 100 times before voicing a opinion against these groups, but nobody is worried about what women think because we never flex our voting power. Atleast this time, let us have our voice heard so that not only for this bill but for any future bill addressing women's concerns are taken by political parties seriously.
