Yesterday My Husband and me had a great big argument! It all started with the Cabbage porial that I had cooked. He says that I am the best at Making the worst Cabbage sabji and I was like A cabbage is Cabbage. I cook it in the best way taught to me (That is all i can do about cooking you see)..............
Can any of you suggest different ways of cooking Cabbage??
Sudha....how did you prepare.....can you write in detail including details of the texture, colour and the taste as per you?
Try this...
Bring water to boil and add cabbage (chopped thin, but long around 1.5 to 2 inches), some ginger and green chillies.. and salt. Boil for 1 minute. The cabbage should be just boiled. Drain the water and set the cabbage aside. (Drink it if you like it tastes quite good). On a frying pan add a spoon of oil add mustard and split urad dal. When it splutters add the cabbage and just turn over once and switch the gas off. You may or may not add shredded coconut to this (your choice).
This will go with any south indian menu. try and let me know

hope it will be very useful to u.........
Similar to what Sunitha has written, I dont boil the cabbage initially but leave it to get cooked by covering with a lid after saute stage. You can even add some curry leaves and lil turmeric powder. Add a bit of coconut to the veggie at the end. Dont forget to add salt :)
You can even boil the cabbage and add it to your potato subji which can be eaten along with chapathi or poori. If you add peas and make it a lil more spicy, you may even make it as your stuffing for sandwich
ok......let me tell you the method which i learnt from my ex-neighbour...
the smell of cabbage varies according to the quality. If the cabbage is not good then end product will also be like that...
wat u can do is...after the regular cooking with perfect water...when its time for tampering.. along with mustard add cumin seeds..(.jeerakam) which we normally wont use in south indian tampering..this will give distinctive flavour and also the secret ingredient "Grated Ginger" along with coconut..you will never go wrong with this..the falvour would be awesome..it will r'emove bad odour from the cabbage..I have tried this with my sil who hates cabbage and guess wat..it became her favourite...! Tell me the result..
hey girls thank you all!
I am going to get one cabbage now and prepare it soon and let you all know of the result.
I do a simple method (though I know it may not be the healthy way).
Heat oil in a pan, add mustard, let it burst. Then add urad dal ( 1 tsp), hing, curry leaves.
Add the washed and cut cabbage.
Soak moong dal (2tsp) in little water. Then remove it from water and add it to the cabbage.
Add turmeric, salt, red chiily powder.
Mix well. Close it fully for 5 mins. Then place the spoon and close it for 10-15 minutes.
Add grated coconut if required.
One thing... add salt while boiling or after switching off the gas.. Cabbage gives water if salt is added while on the heat...
a thing about cleaning cabbage. certain cabbages that are grown in unhigenic places(there is no way to find out) contain tiny worms that cannot be seen by naked eyes. if not cooked properly these travel to the brain and create extensive damage.so always soak cabbage in salt water with seperared leaves.( not chunks of cabbage).happy cooking.
There are diff variations-for rice/sambar/rasam-
Microwave the cabbage with moogdal and little water.
Add oil in the pan-mustard seeds, urad dhal, perungayam, curry leaves, little ginger and green chillies...add the boiled cabbage n moongdhal...add salt and coconut in the end...
For makg sabji for roti, the method is diffrnt
Sapna you scared me.
Shobana. I would like to know the recepie for sabji too.
And all, i am going to try the cabbage in all the ways mentioned here and see if he finaly likes cabbages.

Hi Sudha..
This is my way of cooking..I micrwave the cabbage for 5 minutes..once this is in semi boiled stage..I heat oil in a pan and add jeera..after which i add the cabbage and to it add the turmeric, chilli and garam masala powder..Add salt to taste..this would give the cabbage an entirely different flavour..Since i dont like coconum much, i prepare the cabbage this way..
@VaiArun you are really lucky!!!
