Medicines for Headache

It is always important that your prescribing physician be aware of any other medications you are taking both prescriptions meds and OTC's. Before taking narcotic analgesics especially be careful to discuss it with your doctor if you are also taking any of the following:

  • Anesthesia adjunct--Anileridine; Buprenorphine
  • Anesthesia adjunct, opioid analgesic--Butorphanol; Hydromorphone; Levorphanol; Meperidine; Morphine; Nalbuphine; Oxymorphone; Pentazocine
  • Antidiarrheal--Codeine; Morphine
  • Antitussive--Codeine; Hydrocodone; Hydromorphone; Methadone; Morphine
  • Pulmonary edema therapy adjunct--Morphine

Some of the commonly used names of Headache medicines: dextropropoxyphene, dihydromorphinone, levorphan, papaveretum, pethidine

 

Narcotic analgesics are used to relieve pain. Some of these medicines are also used just before or during an operation to help the anesthetic work better.

·  Naltrexone (e.g., Trexan)--Narcotics will not be effective in people taking naltrexone

·  Rifampin (e.g., Rifadin)--Rifampin decreases the effects of methadone and may cause withdrawal symptoms in people who are dependent on methadone

·  Carbamazepine (e.g., Tegretol)--Propoxyphene may increase the blood levels of carbamazepine, which increases the chance of serious side effects

·  Central nervous system (CNS) depressants or

Zidovudine (e.g., AZT, Retrovir)--Morphine may increase the blood levels of zidovudine and increase the chance of serious side effects

Home Remedy for Headache

·        Massage the forehead by rosemary oil. This would provide relief from headache.

·        For people who have chronic headache, drinking a glass of water mixed with a tsp of honey in an empty stomach is the best way to deal with it.

·        Put 2 to 4 drops of cow's butter or ghee in the nostrils for about seven days. This is an effective remedy for headache caused due to sinusitis.

·        Make a paste using 3-4 cloves. Apply this paste on the forehead. It would provide instant relief from the headache.

·        Consuming freshly sliced apple each day empty stomach cures all the chronic headaches.

·        For headache caused due to cold, warm water gargling, nasal cleaning with warm water and steam inhalation would be beneficial.

·        Apply a sandalwood powder paste over the forehead. Let the paste dry. Once dry, rub it and then wash.

·        Take some ginger powder and moisten it. Apply this over the forehead. It is beneficial in treating headache.

·        If the headache is because of exposure to cold air, make a paste with the help of 1 tsp each of finely ground cinnamon and water. Apply this paste on the forehead.

·        Watermelon juice mixed with sugar works well for headaches due to exposure to excessive heat.
