A bitter experience with Dr Prema Krishnaswami, OBG, Chennai

During the 36th week of my pregnancy, we had to move to Chennai due to pressing personal reasons.  Following the advice of a distant relative, we started seeing Dr Prema Krishnaswami who consults in Isabel hospital and has her own clinic in Mylapore. We had a very bitter experience with her.

My pregnancy had been smooth all along. The scan results were perfectly ok and the baby was growing fine. When we started consulting Dr prema, she said that the baby had a condition called IUGR (intra uterine growth retardation) - In lay man's terms it meant that the baby was too small for its gestational age. Read about IUGR on the internet and you will see that it can lead to several complications and can even endanger the life of the baby.

We were extremely shocked and distressed. After the next scan in the following week, she said that the IUGR condition was still present. She also said that a normal delivery was unlikely due to this, and that I had to undergo a C-section one week before my due date. Not only this, I had to get admitted 3 days before the C section, during which time she would "administer oxygen and monitor the IUGR". She also mentioned that if necessary the baby can be kept in the NICU or even sent to Child trust hospital for special care. (very well planned indeed!!!) We were too shocked to question her at that point in time, so we fixed a date for the Csection and came back home. You can imagine what my family went through during the next few days.I was stuggling not to go into a depression myself and make things worse for me and my baby. But something kept irking us. Why a C section? Why administer oxygen? How did the baby's growth suddenly become restricted? I started researching extensively on the internet, talking to people but did not get any answer. Almost everyone advised us to take a second opinion. A friend of mine had a colleague who was consulting Dr Mala Vijayakrishnan of Vijaya hospital and was very satisfied with her,. The very next day we saw Dr Mala, and showed her all the reports. I was advised another scan (by this time I was at 38 weeks). To our relief and joy, they said that there was nothing to worry. "There is no IUGR, nothing, your baby is absolutely fine!!" - these were the exact words!!
Yes, the baby's abdomen circumference was a little low for its gestational age, but certainly not low enough to be called IUGR. Infact the fetus already weighed 2.66 kg and anything above 2.5kg cannot even be termed as low birth weight. They also assured me that a C section would not be done unless it becomes unavoidable. Needless to say, I stopped going to Prema and stuck to Vijaya hospital.

I had a normal delivery one day before my due date - a healthy baby! We'll always be grateful to Dr Mala and her team at Vijaya hospital for this.

And as for Dr Prema, we realized later that she was once a very renowned and famous doctor. But for the past 10 years or so, she was known to goof up deliveries. Also her C section rate was very high compared to other doctors. I can't even begin to imagine what might have happened if we had continued consulting her. Even if she did deliver the baby alright, she might have put the baby through numerous tests and monitoring in the NICU, me through an unnecessary C section, my entire family through immense stress, and ofcourse charged us a foot and an arm for all of this!

This doctor is known for her C-sections and I have heard that she will give all possible reasons so that the patient opts for C-sec even if there is no real problem. I have not had personal experiences but my aunt who had her first baby normal had her second one through Dr.Prema in 1990 which turned out C-sec without any problem and some friends too.

not only that doctor ,most of the doctors turned out commercial today.even i was admitted before 15 dyas at isabell saying i had diabets and the doctor whom i saw was an old lady .she didnt say before hand that i had to undergo c-sec.whenever she sees the scan she will say everything is normal and baby is also normal ,the story went on......i was made c-sec that too vertical one sufferring a killing pain for next 2 days with a big lump of 72000rs and staying for 28 dayys in hospital itself.......all to land up in one more opr now,

now its 2yrs ,before a year i had a pain near my naval ,as i was abroad i was not able to check there ,after coming here when i went for the check up to the same DGO ,she said u r sufferring from umblical hernia ,who must have lifted some weight .having a small baby and lifing weight is un avoidable ,how much ever we be restricted ,suddenly we need to lift something or other......

i consulted one more doctor ,she said iam having umblical hernia ,and she asked why did you do vertical c-sec ,i said i was not aware how they are going to do the operation.she said nowadys no one is doing this type why did you go to old doctor ,they do old method operation only ,now iam going for chk up every month until my hubby comes from abroad, because i cant do the opr having small child.

the doctors here in our country  should say what type of operation they are going to do ,what happened to our health etc, when my husband went for tooth ach problem in japan ,the doctor there explained him about the problem and how he is going to rectify it .the same process should be folowed here ,mine is an example gals,so whenever you go to a doctor ,if she tells about c-sec enquire well, how they r going to cut ur tummy to take the baby out and all etc.

i dont want to mention the doctor  name as she is not seeing anyone now in hospital and whatever pain i had she had taken out my little prince without any sufferring thanks for that .

I too had the delivery at Vijaya Hospital only.(normal delivery) I had all the check ups in vijaya only. During the last scan they told that the child head is not pointing downwards,   anyway we will wait till the date of delivery.. My Expected Delivery date (EDD) came… But still there is  no pain or bleeding. When I went to Hospital on my EDD Dr. Mala told me that we will wait for one more week, still the child head is not pointing downwards… And the solution for this is WALK WALK WALK….

My fear started kadavule eppa namaku papa thala thirumbum pain eppa varum….. and I started walk walk walk. By Gods Grace the next day around 5.30 a.m bleeding started. In my home everybody said that panikudam udainjiduchu… But still no pain nothing.  I am 100% normal. I casually gone to hospital. They admitted me around 7.30a.m . Doctors, nurses everybody came. They started their treatments. Pain started..  Around 12 O’ Clock in the afternoon they are talking that still the child head in not pointing downwards….

Oh God!!!! I want only normal delivery. Till 9 months I had all my kitchen works and house works… But still… I feel crying…. (Already crying of pain) Now definitely in the hands of God only. From 7th month onwards I started to chant the mantra of Goddess karparakshambigai…

Hey sankara smarahara Bramahathathi natha Mannatha samba sasisooda Harathri soolin Sambo sukaprasavakrutha Pavame thayalo Shri mathrubootha Siva balayamam namasthey.

With that pain itself I started continuosly in my mind that slokas . Around 3’O Clock they are dicussing about C-section for me.. (After bleeding started they cant wait for a long time) Around 5’O Clock One of the nurse said that she saw the child hair…(Ennoda sandoshathuku allave illa) Then immediately they taken me to the Labour Room. At 5.25 p.m My Child born….

My sister also had delivery at Vijaya Hospital only. At the time of birth the child wait is 4 kg. And she had NORMAL DELIVERY

Hi dears,

I also would like to share my personal exp. with this Isabel...Do you imagine one thing ..I shd not say now...If I continued my consultation their,I would have done abortion for me..The one I consulted was a chief doctor over their..forget her name..yes Dr.Philomena ..I was under medicines for removing my wisdom teeth that time without knowing I was conceived..So we went thr to chk with them about my X-ray and med which I had..whether that will affect my baby or not ..She said..she  wont assure anything as I took flagyl for 10 days..she said it would affect baby growth. and it was my decision to continue it or to abort..Without knowing anything I even asked about doing abortion thr..But luckily she said we will not do it here and asked me to go to some thr place where they will concentrate especially abortions..My manager  and my frined also had C-section's their without any reasons...When I went t gunasekaran's hospital in T.Nagar, they changed my mind completely and cheerd me up to continue my pregnancy in happy way..when I told about my exp. with isabel they immediatly told that lady name and laughed with smile..So I understand that these type of incidents are very popular among the industry and their circle....

This is good chance I shared my exp. here..But still few others are also their who works only for money..If any blog is created just to share these kind of exp. I have few things to share in other verticals also......

Happened to see this link ...just sharing

Hi,

I wud also liek to share my exp. Not all docs opt for C-sec for money nor or all C-secs done for want fof money. Mine was a rare case of breech baby, ie the panikudam broke and the fluid had leaked almost to empty. My due date was ten days ahead only and i was working. I had infact applied for maternity leave only from the next day. On the date of delivery i went to office. But i was not feeling comfortable and i felt the liquid discharge. So i called up my doc. I was consulting in Raju hospital till my seventh month and shifted to St.Thomas hspital at Butt road to one Dr. Hepsiba. She had given me her mobile no. When i went for my check up in the ninth month, she also disclosed whe may not b in town during the first week of September and my due date was in the second week of sepember only and that she wud b in town that time.

When i called her up in the morn on 8th September, she attended my call, listened to the symptoms and instructed me to get admitted immediately. By the time i went to the hospital, she had already caleld the hospital staff and informed them that one Ms. Ramya wud come for admission and to allote a room for me. So i got admitted. But no pain or any other symptom. During the day my mom wud have made atleast half a dozen calls to the doc. And everytime she used to answer politely. Then at five or so My docs assistant and another senior doc came examined me and then decided to have a C-sec, as the baby was a breech baby and she had passed motion inside the womb itself. But all through i was not informed that the sitaution is a little tricky. The doc gave me an assuring smile that everything is ok and there was one sister who got me ready for the surgery. I cannot forget the look on her face, one wiht such radiance and a very assuring touch of comfort. As mine was an emergency surgery the op. theatre was not free. So made a make shift op theatre and finally at 8.20 in the night my sweet angel was brought to this world.

Since the baby had passed motion inside the womb itself, they were not sue if she had consumed it or not. So they said she looks normal, but only after observation of a day can v say if she is free of jaundice. And by God's grace she did not have any symptoms of jaundice.

My story is on the other side of the topic, which goes to show how caring and sympathetic some docs are , even today. And i had to b operated on due to compelling reasons. The reasons were ofcourse shared with my parents and my hubby before the C-sec. Ofcourse we had no choice as the baby was in stress.

She became famous only after publishing a series of article about childbirth and pregnency in Anantha vikatan...that was some 11 yrs ago. People jus flocked to her after reading the articles. I too have a personal experience. she has tie up with leading laboratories and ask us to go for costly laboratory investigations. once my sister in law had to undergo a test when she was pregnent.the test was to take the fluid thru an injection in her womb to check if the foetus was healthy. the reason she gave was- my brother and s-i-l were cousins!!

Hi, I had my delivery in Bangkok. C-section is quite common here...I was very particular for normal delivery ever since I got pregnant. Ofcourse we can only be particular. After symptoms we rushed to hosp and they were monitoring uterine contractions, fetal rate, etc...suddenly the baby had erratic heart beat (which they showed in the monitor) and obstetrician said...had to do C section. It was done immediately and the lil one's lungs didnt expand properly and abnormal air/water went inside her lungs and she had to be in the ICU for a week after birth. The neonatalogist was too good so as my obstetrician. Am sure bcos of them we cud have the lil one enter this world.

On the second day, I was asked to walk on my own slowly...It was quite shocking for my mom - she said...ennadee ippadi solra. I walked on my own from 3rd with lil confidence. I was discharged on the 4th day and we had our bedroom upstairs and I managed to climb up too...Since our lil one was in the ICU, I used to go to hospital 2 times daily to feed her...

May be few doctors are making it as a business. But, as I understand from Dr. Jeyam (Vijaya Health Center) the infant mortality has been reduced so well after the entry of C sections only...Ofcourse we will have to be careful with the business doctors too...But, why cant we have some trust also on doctors?????

I just read the first story.....and I would like to add...my sister poor girl was also ruined by Dr. PremKrishnaswamy. Everything was normal...the labour pain indeed was normal but the great old Dr. insisted on C Section....it was a straight C section. My family's first baby and we never had any past experience and we just did not go for second opinion. We regret that now. The baby was healthy. It was a boy and he is now 7 years old. Since the first one was C-section the second was forced a CSec. My sister is still struggling to stand have a long bath. Its very bad...and I blame the great Dr. I was also carrying when my sister was carrying her 2nd child and i told my mom that I will not go to Dr. Prema. This information was passed on by mom to Dr. and she got very angry and said that I should do my delivery at home and not to go to her. How rude from a old lady. May be she had her good cases....but off late its bad. Pls advice all your friends. "Be Aware"

So the guy was taken to another hospital and on the way he was no more. If atall the so called big hospital had everything in place..especially in the emergency room....we would have saved this guy. A future daddy...a good friends, brother , son and a very helful heart. We miss you Danny Brother.

I wud like to share my experience. I was consulting dr. prema for my first pregnancy. I felt comfortable in the first chk up and have heard abt the dr from a few of my close relatives. It was all fine and when i went for a chk up during 9months my baby dint hav heartbeat. I was immediately admitted in Isabel. The dr told me that dat she was going out of town and whether i cud go to her refered dr in VHS. We refused and went to isabel. And there it was such a bad service especially with the nurses who treated me. I almost was the end of my labour and the sister's dint call the dr. Atlast my mom cud see Prema's assistant Dr.Meenakshi who had been there for her physio treatment. She treated me and finally, i was made to expel my baby which was no more. Prema came almost wen things are done and was scolding the nurse for not informing her. If Meenakshi was not thr then i dnt knw wat cud have happened. I missed my cute child. I had such a bad experience with this doc so I was even hesitant to go for the postnatal.

When I had my second pregnancy, i consulted dr. Lalita Abraham and now I have a litttle prince by gods grace though it was a c-sec. im thankful to my docs - Dr. Santha, Lalitha and Esther.

Hi,

Its realy terrifying and heart shattering to read all these comments about one or more of the Doctors who are being treated as Demi Gods in our society.  I feel sorry for all the pains (Physical and mental) and pray to god (Real one) for the betterment.

Am 25 yrs old and going to get married in the month of August this year.  Mine is a successful Love marriage (4 years and still counting).  Am a moderately built person but with some ailments like back pain, headache etc.,  Am yet to choose a one stop Doctor for me and would be great if you could suggest a few for me.  As stated earlier in another 7 months I will be married and I would like to be in the best form as possible.

Veterans... seek your guidance in this regards

Nalini,

Congratulations on your impending wedding. Look for a blog by Admin and Sshanthi called Recommended Doctors and Help for Working moms which will have all the details. I personally would recommend Dr.Mohan Rao on GN Chetty Road in T Nagar who consults. His clinic/residence is right next to Hotel Dee Cee Manor.

Good Luck

I too had a bitter experience with Dr. Prema. My 1st conception. Eagerly for the first visit with Prema. She made us wait and finally cancelled the appointment saying that her daughter failed in the CA exams and she is in a upset mood and walked out. Then again we fixed an appointment  a few days later, while consulting her, she started to talk unnecessary questions and my husband got very angry, shouted at her and just walked out, then we had a good time at EVK medical centre.

But with that experience we shall advise, anyone not to have consultation with Dr. Prema.

On the other hand, my son was too big and weighed 4.5kg on delivery. To the astonishment it was a normal deliver, the doctor also did feel the surprise of delivering  such a big child on normal. That day was the 25th jublie celebrations of that hospitak and as he was the first born child of that day at 3:45, the doctors had him in their hands and had photos and videos. I was very happy to have such a good experience.

Bhavani, So sorry to hear about the loss of your child. Your case in certainly more traumatic compared to mine.

To the others, thanks for sharing your experiences. I do agree that we should take some sort of action against such doctors, but we need several concrete cases, and the time and effort of a lot of people. As with everything else in India, the question is - who will take the initiative? who will lead this and how?

The least we can do is to make people aware of such irresponsible doctors by atleast writing about them on the internet, and that's what I did.

Reading this,

I have to share my experiehce too. My two co-sis had their deliveries done by Dr. Prema Krishnaswamy. So when I got pregnant, I too consulted her. Everything was going fine untill I was administered an iron injection in the 14th week(my hemoglobin count never was bad still I dont know why I was given that; I came to know that the injection need not have been given by Dr. Uma Ram who delivered my two cute babies). After I got the injection, within a week I started bleeding and when a scan was done, I was told that there is a cut in the placenta and enough oxygen is not going to the baby and I have to undergo an abortion.

As advised, I underwent that. Later I came to know that the baby is a boy. Then I started consulting Dr. Uma Ram and things went smoothly. I got my two kids delivered by her.

The title of this post made me look into what all is about and as just as thamil said, she became famous after her articles were published in Anantha Vikatan
