Natural Birth Vs C-Section:

Natural birth has so many advantages and risk free over c-section. You know that there are some situations where c-section is safer for mother and child. In a small number of situations c-section are lifesaving. But not for all. There are many situations where the parents-to-be are pushed to accept for unnecessary c-section. The mother-to-be is unaware of the healthy pregnancy, natural childbirth and bringing up a healthy baby.

Chennai Birth Network:

(CBN) is a not-for-profit organization formed by people who are passionate about informed pregnancy, natural childbirth and breastfeeding support. CBN aims to bring about awareness to pregnant women on the merits of evidence based care practice in maternity care.

Professionals from various functions like doctors, childbirth educators, doulas, lactation consultants, media participate to change the way we give birth to a more beautiful, involved and satisfying experience. Chennai Birth Network is an extension of Birth India (www.birthindia.org) which is a not-for-profit organization that aims to promote the benefits, both physical and psychological of natural childbirth and best practices to achieve a normal birth. Birth India has representation through its networks at seven cities in India today.

CBN also plans to hold Mom-to-Mom support groups and Breastfeeding support groups which will be a platform for moms to interact and learn and enjoy as they go through the process of pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding.

The Cause

Today Birthing in India is a highly medicated process with many unnecessary interventions which has contributed to very high Caesarean rates of almost 70% in many private hospitals according to preliminary studies whereas the WHO recommends only a 5 to 15% Caesarean rate.

Also the birthing experience is taken further away from the woman and the family and has become a completely isolated, sterile event with procedures taking priority over the woman’s emotional and physical needs.

In order to bring about improvements in birth options in accordance with changes happening worldwide, Chennai Birth Network has these goals:

Dignity and freedom of choice is a primary right of a woman delivering her baby. To be treated respectfully, with compassion and care for her needs in a very important step in improving birth options for the woman.

Continuous labor support by the presence of husband and also a labor support professional

Reducing unnecessary medical interventions with established risks that lead to an increase in Caesarean births

IInformed Consent on all regular practices and procedures with benefits and risks explained and agreed upon.

CBN will hold events that will campaign for women to understand and educate themselves about conception, pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding support. We intend to bring in experts in birthing and related faculties to improve the birthing options for women in Chennai.
