Description : Vinayaka Charthurthi celebrations. Vinayaka Chaturthi : The season of celebration and revelry is finally here!!! And is there any better way to begin the season of festivals than with a celebration dedicated to the God of all beginning, Lord Ganesha. Vinayaka Chathurthi brings to mind the large, versatile images of Vinayaka that are the result of months of hard work and toil by idol making artists. A rather unusual flower that comes into prominence during this festival is the Erukkam flower. These small lilac flowers that usually grow along wayside roads are the preferred flowers of Lord Ganesha. But did you know that the flower is not only a favorite of the elephant god but is also a friend of those in pain? Indeed the plant has medicinal properties that helps cure different kinds of joint aches. And what is more, the roots of the Erukkam plant are also used by artists to carve out images of Vinayaka! So let us be like the humble Erukkam plant which thanks the Earth in whatever way it can for Her bounty. Don't you think the simplest way to show our gratitude for the earth would be by saying ‘no' to the painted plaster of Plaster Vinayaka idols that clog our waterbodies and instead opt for more eco friendly options?
