Bharatmomsmother- Cacofonix question

My eldest one is 10 years old and so far I haven't left my kids alone at home. I've been hiring live-in maids to keep a watch on my kids when I go for work or away from home. My last maid quit and I was wondering if I've to hire one more as my kid's have grown up (but not sure if they can stay alone). What age do you let your oldest stay home alone? And how long can I leave them alone at home. Please suggest.

No simple answer to that one. Depends on the child and the maturity level. But I think baby steps is the key. Go to the neighbors for 20 mins...then the store for a half hour. Wait to leave them in the evening until they are really showing you they would know what to do in case of emergency.
