oh yes. Many parents do that. Most of the play schools take kids from 2 yrs. In my son's play school there was a child who was just 1.5 yrs.

Putting kids in play school is good for the kids too. They will get to know what school is and they won't cry when they go to school (for pre-kg or lkg). They will learn to play with other kids (in this time of only child families), do their things by themselves (like to put on their shoes etc), keep things in places, share toys.

People say that the child will learn to speak more words as they try to immitate other kids and teachers. Few kids eat well at school on seeing others eat their snack.

All this will happen when the child goes to school directly instead of play school. So play school is not a must, but just an outing for the child

Hi Sangeetha.. I guess you can go ahead with the play school. I put my son to it, when he was one and half. and as far as the LKG plan... if your child is nearing 2 now, she would be nearing 3 next year the same time.. that means, she would be eligible for Pre KG next year in 2010. Many schools expect a child who is between 2.5 and 3.5 as on June 1 to join Pre KG that year. To join in LKG the child needs to be minimum 3.5 on June 1 for that acad year. Check it out in the schools you are targetting. Most schools are strict on the age lines. As for the playschool, its not mandatory, but just a step to make the child comfortable with its age group and loose inhibitions and fears of being in a group. It just helps to groom the child, what with many children being single child in the nuclear families these days.

Hello friend, It is very very important you send your kid to school when they turn 2. They learn how to be independant and social. I read that memory cells are 100% till they turn 5. I have a son who is 3 yrs and I started sending him to montessori school when he was 2.5 yrs and found that it was too late.He enjoys going to school and does not want holidays. There is a 1.5 yr old girl in his school and I feel she is more diciplined and focussed than any other kid of her age who do not attend a school. I am not sure about other methods of education. As for as montessori method is concerned it really gives them lot of thinking power and individuality.Helps us and kids, know the areas of interest. It is not that for the sake of education we should send them to school, it is to develop communication skills, learning to be social,to increase selfconfidence at a very young age.

Hi Poornima, Could you please elaborate a little bit more on montessori education? What activities are the children made to do? How are they evaluated? And if possible, could you please give me some names of montessori schools?

yes the earlier the better ....and select a school that's close to ur place so its convinient for u as well....there are only advantages in putting a child into playschool....

  1. Interaction with kids and Strangers
  2. Learning to be independent
  3. Toilet training
  4. Confidence Level/Awareness
  5. Knowledge

And as for us ...it gives us sometime to catch up on other interests

Hi arun varunamma,

Thank you very much for your interest in knowing about this unique system of education. Since i did not come online for long time i could not reply immediately.

Montessori method unlike other modes improves pencil grip for the kids first and proceeds with writing. To help them improve pencil grip they have lot of puzzles with a grip on top of the puzzles. It not only trains the brain to solve puzzle but the grip helps them to hold pencil properly. Mathematics is taught in abacus method and flash cards are used for numbers and alphabets. They understand what one and two really means. The foundation is very good. Apart from this they teach how to tie lace, using zip, buttons etc. Science classes let them understand the very basic things at young age and every subject has its own speciality.

They would love to study and you don't have to bother when they grow up. They will not be taught in group like normal schools. They will be taught how to use the apparatus and then on they will continue to do on their own. They will only be supervised by the teachers. This  will help them to be independant and when they grow up they would do their work on their own. We can write even a book about the advantages.

About montessori schools, you can find the list in this site itself. You can choose the one closer to your home.
