My Daughter is 3 Years,9 Months,We are living in Sydney, they dont teach anything, just they paint, color, play. I am much worried about my daughters education because we will be returning to India only by end of dec 2010. i teach her alphabets, rhymes in home, will he be able to compete with our Indian children while we come back. I want to know in detail, what do they teach in Lkg & Ukg?
Hi Harshu,
My son is studying in LKG in a CBSE school,he's 4yrs old, they teach him alphabets, some small sentences like "A fish can swim" in F for Fish ,slanting line, sleeping line wrt writing.
Some coloring activity is also done, for rhymes u can check British council's site for songs for kids!
The school time is only 3hrs,i give him some coloring activities at home,he has started wriitng alphabets now only,he enjoys school and thats what i like now.
Coloring actiivities r imp,cos it improves their pencil grip,it'll only develp the kid's interest in writing. So dont worry, she'll sure pick up when u r here.
In LKG, CBSE syllabus, there is 1-50 numbers, ONE-TEN number names.
In English, A-Z capital and small letters.
In UKG, they'll start with small 3 letter words, like car, bat, cup etc. Numbers will continue to 500, number names till 100. Towards the end of the year, single digit addition will be introduced.
I had bought lots of these magnetic alphabet and that really helped in teaching.
Hi Harshu,
There are lot more that you can teach at home than in School.
Better subscribe in Brillkids.com and there are lot more free materials which you can download and start your home schooling with powerpoint slideshows.
U can take him to story time in library in sydney where they teach rhymes and there are some good books there as well.
Where in sydney do u stay?.Take him around more often and talk to him lot and teach him that way.u can get some help frm Chennai moms also for flash cards. and some good sites where you can get some materials to teach.
See "Lets make our kids education better" groups in Chennaimoms..
All the best...
Hello Friends,
Thanks to all of you for giving useful information to teach my daughter.
Keep in touch.

Akhilaa
Hi there Harshu I am also from Sydney my daughter was born here and she is now 21, It may appear they don't do much when they are in primary and I felt the same. Everything they learn here is for a reason and I know now she is one brilliant child here. She is doing a double degree and an honours student of Law as well. So please do not be concerned about the style of education here. Its one of the best. If you are going to live here, I will not be concerned too much. My daughter got 98.5 in her HSC and went to selective high school as well. good luck :-)
Harshu,
Like NEWSWEETWAVES said, do not be concerned if you are going to continue to live in Sydney. Every method of teaching followed by different countries is for a reason.
In the situation that you return back to India, then most of what has been mentioned above are followed in CBSE.
1. By UKG, the child has to be able to recognise and write all the letters of the alphabet ---- Cursive writing pattern both capitals and small letters
2. Numbers 1 - 100 written and they should be able to spell the numbers as well....my son is in UKG second term and is now taught to spell the numbers and write them upto 10 as of now
3. Sight words / Action words / Association of ideas / Lot of emphasis will be given on EVS topics / Stories / Simple sentences / Addition
