Hi,
Am a working mother of a 8 mo baby boy. His doctor as advised me to give him bananas ( i used to give malai vazhai pazham) but my MIL is against it saying he'll catch cold if we give bananas and so I have stopped giving him bananas. Also, she tells me not to give cabbage or chow chow again for the same reason ( he'll catch cold) whereas the doctor tells that we can give any vegetable.
The other side of it, the doctor has advised not to give any milk other than mother's milk until he is 1 yr old. (The doctor is strongly against tinned food, so lactogen or cerelac or other such food is strictly prohibited) But my MIL is asking me to give Aavin milk. I want to follow doctor's advice but at the same time don't want to upset my MIL. What do i do?
Can someone let me know if we can give bananas and milk to my son?
Thanks,
Anitha
hi anitha...
my daughter is in her sixth month and her doctor has asked to start her on mala vazhaipazham.... if u r afraid about ur son catching cold then try to give it during the afternoons...
as long as u r nursing ur baby... its better if u don't introduce any other milk...

Hi Anita,
Doctors soldradha kekalam...thappu illa..but we know more about our child's health la.
Even I dont give my daughter (she is 3.8 yrs now) banana, grapes and all as she will catch up cold immediately in a hour or so...semaya irumal vandhu immediately she vomits, fever appadinu poidum.
What I feel instead of making them strong and healthy with these fruits and veggies...i dont want to spoil their present health..so i dont give her.
And regarding milk...if u r really interested u can continue feeding...i fed my daughter till 2 yrs.
It will be the best stuff for immunity against various diseases.
So go with ur MIL's words..after all she will say for good reasons.
Konjam periyavana udaney thandhukalam...:)
Hi Anitha,
As with my experience, i will say we can give Malai vazhapazham any time. Even during the rainy season it will not affect the baby. Though i was also afraid at first, after confirming with many elders and my sisters, i started giving her. No issues due to that till now. Infact i give her 2 everyday since it is very small.
With regards to aavin milk, my doctor said ii is like poisoning ur baby. So i dint give till she was 1 yr. But now the same doctor suggested to switch to aavin slowly as she crossed 1 yr. But my sisters started giving it from 1 month of the baby as they dint have enough milk.
Since u r blessed with it y not follow the same practice. Atleast for banana u can listen to ur MIL, but convince her that mother's milk is only best for babies and u can continue till ur baby is 1 yr. No compromise with the baby's immunity.
Outside fruits and Veggies are always available but mother's milk can be given only till certain time. It is very essential.
Hi anitha,
As others have said, continue feeding ur son with ur milk as long as u r able to...for my second child, i was able to give only till 4 months...after tht no milk....so as long as u r able to feed her....do it...
As to aavin milk, my doctor said tht when u r initially starting with aavin milk, give it 1:3 ratio - 1 part milk - 2 parts water...and once ur child is used to it...u can give full milk...i started for my kid at 4 months...
As to mala valapazham....it can be given at any age starting from 6 months and tht is one category of banana which will not induce cold....may be other varieties will give cold, but not mala pazham and yelaki.......my daughters are very very fond of banana and i started giving them from 6 months.....they will have 2 daily....
My elder one is 3 yrs and younger one is 10 months.....
hello anitha,
aavin milk s only alternate 2 mothers milk. very very safe acc 2 my experience. regarding bananas mallai pazham s best, very good filling 4r the baby.but v can avoid ven the baby has cold. this was advised 2 me by a senior peadiatrician. so vth out any fear u can give u r child.
If your son is otherwise fine, Urine surrounded by ants is no indication that someone is diabetic , this is quite a common feature, but because diabetes runs in families so whenever you visit your paediatrician next do discuss your family history with him so that he/she can keep a watch.
Hi Natalia,
No 2 kids are same so u cannot compare him with your daughter, From what you have written, doesn’t looks like there is a problem, some kids start speaking late, so if his understanding of things and hearing is all right, don’t worry, just continue talking to him, reading to him and otherwise stimulating him and just relax and enjoy your babies!
