Hi Friends,

While going through Poornima's blog on reading, it just reminded me of a question that I was planning to put forth in Chennaimoms. What kind of books can we read for a 1 yr old? Do they enjoy when we read stories? Where can we get such books?

Hi , I got for my daughter when she was one year : collection of "My pretty Board - Books of Numbers , ABC , Fruits & Vegetable , Colours & Shapes " . These four books she herself started identifying after a couple of months & was reading it whenever I sit in computer with my work ( i was a workaholic that time ) . At the age of two + I gave her the book in the same collection  My Body , Animals & Birds . At 3 + I made her write written in each book in english    ( of course in normal way not cursive ), she loved this time pass.  Also at the same time I started getting her the story books of Hanuman & Beem (with lots of pictures on it & I used to read it for her ... And then on I started getting her , her own copy of toots books ( she read it in library & wanted us to subscribe for her ) , till now Toots comes home monthly once book & she will tell the spelling & i will tell her what the word is & she read then the full sentence ...

buy picture dictionary books, hard bound untearable books with large, colourful pictures.

kids of age will like to pick up names for objects around them, show them picture dictionary books, with vehicles,animals,birlds,vegetables,fruits....colourful pictures shd interest them. reading books shd not stop there, ask them to name the objects that they see in real life.

give them crayons and colouring books, allow them to scribble(not on walls),this improves fine motor skills, eye hand coordination...

U can tell stories, but show them pictures also, like picture story books, their imagination wudnt have developed like us. when we read a book,we imagine the scene because we have prior knowledge of places, things. since they wont have such prior knowledge, u shd show them pictures  and narrate wiht lot of actions and facial expressions.

u can find such books in all leading book stores.

Hi,

I got my son books with large pictures and colors. Also, it has to be short- lasting about 2-5 mins. There are some really good books that you can find in the book stire. If you go to amazon.com, you can search for books and parents usually have reviews on them and then you can order these books at landmark or such place.

I would recommend The Hungry Caterpillar by Earl Carle- My son still loves it!

Hey Anitha,

I agree with what Thamil has suggested. The picture books are the best ones to attract child's attention.

Apart from picture books, you can read bed time story books. There are story cards which are available, in which you will find stories like red riding hood, goldilocks, gingerbread man. These cards solve more than story reading purpose. The order of the story can also be arranged by the child as it grows up.

You can also draw and prepare story book for your child which am sure would give immense satisfaction to you. If your baby is a boy then anything about car would help and if she is a girl then fairy tales would help.

Teaching them how to handle books is far more important than anything else. Though you may not be sure whether the baby would really understand ,plz keep telling the baby about the care that she/he should take while handling.

A suggestion for you...not for your child...

Please read books/ articles about Maria montessori. You will find it helpful as your child grows in various aspects. The basic ideas behind her method of handling children has fascinated me always.
