Is speaking fast being fluent ? how many realize the importance of stress and pause, voice modulation etc.? may not be a good question, but just noticed by observation
not really....not always !! grammar and clarity while being fast cud possibly be taken as fluency technically !!
just reminded of a dialog between Rajnikanth and his employer in the movie Vettaikkaran..
injection is conjunction between the conduction... blah blah nnu ethetho fast-a ore moochile solluvar..
the employer selects him for his fluency in English!
i for one dont believe being fast means being fluent . stress pause, voice modulation, intonation, use of the right words for the right effect , with the right volume conveys a lot in the way it is meant to convey .
sranj , exactly my point !! and the use of unecessary fillers for ex. like, means innumerable times . i sometimes count the no of times a person repeats a particular word in a conversation :)
Smita..leave of ur fluency..when I happened to sit for on call with US counterpart..U know they are good at fluency...but still u cud see them use....much of fillers like like ...or err err err to complete the sentence..fluency is nothing but the quality of being facile in speech and writing...being fast u can talk all rubbish u want .. with no matter in it.
this is a problem across the world , errr, ummmmm , aeeee (thats for the spanish :) . it doesnt even give u time to think or listen to the sound of your own voice ( which is very helpful in public speaking)
i second velvizhi.. i am on calls almost everyday with business consulting people... though they are the senior most in their respective departments, and sit in the US and UK, they use a lot of fillers..
i know the person sitting next to me using all kinds of filles like.. "u know".. aaa...ooo...eeee.... and lot more.. for no reason...
as i said its not only a US UK problem, just look around you locally, it will be a lot of fun :)
I strongly disagree with this...just imagine the person whose mothertongue is english can't communicate without any fillers..then how come indians?
here i am talking more about speed , using little bit of fillers is fine, but too many sounds toooo awkward...and this isnt about indians vs foreigners
