Bharatmomsmother- ANU4NIVEDH question

Friends,

Today i read an article in the Hindu supplement magazine section, which i found funny as well as thought-provoking. I m sure u must ve read it too.

About how a lady finds it an ordeal to find an electrician and pays a huge amount for a very simple task, and wonders if simple things like these should ve been taught at school..!

I wondered, nijamave ippadi school la solli kudutha... along with sine theta, cos theta...boyle's law....ayyayyo...(idhellam padichi yenna use.. ??)

what should be included in the curriculum ?

Day-to-day tasks, for which we run around finding the skilled workers..

Just for fun, also to think about, gals, lets hear what u think..

Here s my list, in no particular order of preference :

1. Simple tailoring, stiching - we can call upon this in later stages (i.e, now) and improvise to stich our own salwars...WOW..!!! no more haggling with the tailor..!!

2. change the fuse..some of u might already be knowing this - i dont..

3. Fix the leak.... no need to call the plumber

4. Drilling, fixing small door repairs..no need to wait endlessly for the carpenter

5. simple bike repairs - i once pushed my tvs excel super almost 2 kms cos it stopped midway. the mechanic just took a sandpaper and wiped the spark plug, and voila...the bike was okay..took only 3 minutes..

Please add to the list...

p.s: In my school, we had a session called SUPW - Socially Useful productive Work, where they taught some basic electrical works, but most of which we hardly rememberd, we used to callit "Some Useful periods wasted"..

My daughter had such orientation classes in her school in her X std. She knows how to remove a fuse bulb /tube and replace a new one and even check a faulty plug for a power leakage using a tester.

Just that I don't allow her to do as i feel that though they are taught how to do it such things should be attended to by PROFESSIONALS as playing with current is no easy joke. But, it is always good to learn such things.

Apart from that, I ask my daughters to observe a plumber working on a faulty pipe line or a leaking plug, or to see my computer engineer working with the hardwares in the CPU. In fact, my computer service engineer has taught my daughters the ways to correct 'disk-boot failure' happening due to loose disk connection and to run a virus program to scan, detect and remove virus.

Many schools teach that and if they are not taught in school, we should expose them to such jobs performed by experts just to know some first aid activities that they can do for that.

I think its too early to be taught in school as electrical work or drilling appliances may be dangerous at that age. But it can be taught in college. And the Hindu article also mentioned about teaching how to file income tax returns etc. I think such courses should also be taught in college like how to manage money, file returns, insurance options. But even if all these are not taught, we can always learn it at any age. Nobody is going to stop us.

In school, I think more manners need to be taught currently. Like when we're waiting for the lift and the door opens, please wait for people to come out and then enter. not to just barge in. These things can be inculcated in school. People don't think these are important any more.

Schools do teach a lot ...

1. to know the value of food  ... they ensure kids eat whatever we keep not to waste it , from which when they grow they know it's importance  .... my school made us say a prayer everyday before lunch & the class teacher (mind you ever lunch she talks to us before we start ) says there are many kids in our country who cannot get even a single meal , so eat fully & happily with a thanks to your parents & the GOD ....

2. they taught basic tailoring (hand stitch only ) , prayer mixed with pranayamam ( a breath control) & power consumption & saving ... with the teaching of power consumption topic I learnt to work with the basic repairs ( putting fuse & which wire to use for fuse , repairing minor faults of radio etc ) from my Dad .. The teachers can only teach us what to learn & it is upto the students to learn fully with interest & not to forget it later....  As the student life is a bit carefree life , I will say it is up to the mothers to ensure what teacher told in the school & to elaborate on it ....  I learnt that way only & I teach Maya the same way  ....mind u teacher is with 40 kids for 6 hours a day only , but we care for ONE kid only ... so easy for us to make kids revise what they learnt at school... even if it not a subject they teach at school , from one theory word they learn at school we can teach them at home practically ...

Thamil : velaiya therinjukkaruthu naama pannathan ma ... I do the complete household work (including the small repairs of changing mixie bush & attending the leaking water tap ) cooking , washing (half of it hand wash) , cleaning ..... not only money saving or the happiness of yourself attending your home requirements , but also it keeps you fit ( idha pannama appuram gym thedi alayanum correct ?

In schools the teachers should teach the children -- mainly discipline, cleaning, washing, small works related painting for cup-boards etc stiching the clothes and all. Mainly the teachers should always be friendly with the children and also should teach all the activities in useful manner.

to Anu for raising this topic. I too read the article That was my nedu naalaya aadhangam.  I have always marvelled at the practical knowlege of  mechanics, electricians etc  whereas we are drilled with so many equations throughout schooling which are of no use at all in day to day life. Only one rule holds good for all occasions,"Every action has an equal and opposite reaction"

Things that I would like to add in the syllabus

Yoga,  Basic electrical repairs, Basic laws and our rights. Simple carpentry,  First aid, disaster management techniques, maintaining bank account  and using more of audio visual aids.

I always had that anger why we were asked to dissect cockroaches garden lizards rats and frogs.

Anu,

I have not read that article but i too have thought like tht in many occassions.

Esp ,after becoming a mom.

I was thinking why i didn't study for doctor.Oru chinna jalathoshamna we've to run to doctors.Ofcourse u've to consult ur doc for medicines but basic precautionary medicines amma-ku theriyanum thaane. As small knowledge,a pharmacist knows, adhu naama theirnjakalam dhaane. Some basic first-aids.Carpentry,electical& plumbing work.

@Sayee:Naama thaan avanga earn panradha pathi yosikrom, avanga, solli anupicha vudene vara maattanga, anga vela inga vela-nu izhuthdipanga.Oru chinna bulb maatha kooda we shd wait for hours.Adhu waste dhaane .

And hardware person, yappa ivangaluku wait panniye namaku vayasayidum.

We only can know our urgency,so it's better to know all these essential things in school or atleast in college.

atleast a small course b4 getting married, for both men & women, idha pass paana dhaan kalyanam-nu sollalam

have learnt art and tailoring in school and college but the other day to day skills  were learnt through trial and  error method.. i  have always felt that self help is the best help and so wud try and solve my problems myself. i usually fix broken things, do simple repair jobs, paint grilles and cupboards, etc.  many , i learnt from my husband as he is well versed in these jobs.

makes life more easy and trouble free when u can take care of such menial but important jobs.

good thought , anu

Hi all!

Gud suggestions from u all regarding things to be taught in the curriculum.

I also had tailoring class, and embroidery, yoga everything.

But i didnt give much of importance. They can teach those things. But only if v hav more than an interest at that age one can go for it.

Still Nowa days though they are taught again things will come under stress inclusive of h.w and projects to be done.

So though useful i feel it's hardly applicable. V can get through it when a plumber or an electrician come to our home. I do so.

And mainly apart from this the imp what i feel is level of self-confidence and building up a personality to present themselves in a required situations.

Regards,

Jeyalakshmi.A

Hey... jus now saw this question of urs.... I am surprised that you dint take our SUPW seriously.... we were taught basic cooking, stitching, electrical work, carpentry, etc at school (hmmm i think the school location also matters - I was at Salt Lake Calcutta)... So agar fuse ud gaya toh i was more adept at changing the fuse at home than my husband!!! He would be calling the electrician even to change a light bulb - he was so bad!!

Anyway, I think we should be taught all the basic necessities (to both the sexes) like to stitch, cook, wash clothes, basic gardening, etc... isnt it???? I recently got to know that Isha Home School does these things to its students!!
